Fair value accounting and earnings variability: Evidence from global real estate firms

This study explores the relationship between earnings quality and fair value accounting beyond market-based measures, financial industry-related settings, US firms. It analyzes effect of discretionary measurement investment properties distribution using a sample 2,658 observations 2006 2017 from real estate firms in 36 countries. The results indicate that applying model to subject International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) increases variability decreases smoothness. These links are found for dummy incrementally property values. Managers do not seem exploit their discretion lower-level measurements smooth out further fluctuations. Among appliers, appears increase, smoothness decrease, case strong investor protection sector-specific institutional governance.
